Are you a mother of a girl? Are you a HELICOPTER Mommy?

We all are familiar with phrases like Super Mom, Working Mom, Loving Mom, Funny Mom, Strict Mom, and so on. But today, I am bringing to the table a whole new breed of moms. Ladies and Gentlemen! Brace yourselves as I present to you, oh wait wait! Drum roll please?

The HELICOPTER Mom!

As funny as that sounds, these moms do exist. Ask your girls about it!

In a girl’s dictionary, (especially a teenage girl) there may be no term like overspending, but yes, there most certainly is a term called over-parenting, of which she often accuses her mother. But hey! Isn’t it a mother’s duty to protect you from everything that she perceives as bad and harmful for you?

For such girls, their mom becomes their knight in shining armor, saving them from basically anything and everything, be it a minute pin prick or a major life-changing catastrophe. These girls end up becoming delicate dandelions that get swayed by even the tiniest of swirls of the wind, metaphorically speaking, that is.

Well before I speak any further, allow me to quote my dear friend, the Oxford dictionary, on helicopter parent: “A parent who takes an overprotective or excessive interest in the life of their child or children.” This term emerged from the notion of parents hovering over their children.

My little research over another dear friend, Google, tells me that moms become helicopters, (figuratively speaking) due to the following reasons.

  • Fear of dire consequence
  • Feelings of anxiety
  • Overcompensation
  • Peer pressure from other parents

Moms have our best interests at heart. I second that motion, Milord! But why does parenting their girls have to change from “preparing them for life” to “protecting them from life”?

This only results in our delicate darlings becoming unable and unprepared to live life on their own. That’s not what we want, right?

So, just a teeny tiny request to all the helicopter mommies out there, we understand and respect your concerns completely, but sometimes you just have to let your girls fight their wars, and face their demons on their own. Don’t you think?

After all, you do want her to become an epitome of strength, like you. Right?
