Brave Saudi Arabian Women Take A Big Step Towards Politics

  • JWB Post

It is the time of a revolution! Women in Saudi Arabia are soon set to have their first ever election campaign on Sunday. A step forward to evolve the ways of this patriarchal society!

A whooping 900 women are participating in next month’s municipal elections; it’s a poll that also offers women to vote for the first time.

“If we want to develop or reform our country we should put a woman in every decision-making level,” says Nassima al-Sadah, a candidate in the Gulf coast city of Qatif for the December 12 vote.

Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy with no women in the cabinet. It is also the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive. They must cover themselves in black from head to toe, and require permission from the men of their family to work, travel or marry.

During Abdulla’s reign, in 2013, he named women to the appointed Shura Council which advises the cabinet.

The women are pretty sure that it is pretty difficult to win, yet are refusing to give up hope.

“Frankly, I think it will be a huge positive surprise if we get any women elected,” said one Western diplomat.

Khalid al-Dakhil, an independent political analyst, said he would “of course” consider voting for a woman in the ballot which “should be the first step along the road to democracy.”

Let’s march towards, change, then, Saudi Arabia!
