Julia Gillard: ‘sexism in politics is an issue’

Julia Eileen Gillard is a former Australian politician who served as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia, and the Australian Labor Party leader from 2010 to 2013. She was the first woman to hold either position.

At Fortune magazine’s summit for women last week, Julia said:

“I’m too much of a patriot to think sexism in politics is an issue about Australia. This issue about women and leadership is a global issue. Still, somewhere in our brains, is whispering a stereotype that says if a woman is leading, commanding, she has probably given up on ‘female’ traits of empathy, likeability; she’s probably a bit hard boiled.”

So how does she see it dissolving?

“…until we can shed that stereotype that women, leadership and likeability don’t go together, we will be putting the baggage of that on to the women who do emerge.”

She even spoke on how we can raise our kids with no gender-differentiation:

“I don’t think people are born with a blinkered gender construct about what they can achieve in the world. We stamp that onto them. And we’ve got to pull the stamp away.”

Discussions everywhere show how important it has become for the society to change their narrow stereotypes that say women ‘can do this and can’t do that. But before all this, women are requested to not let self-doubt overshadow them!
