My background has given me strength: Says Mumbai Girl Who Was Sexually Abused As A Teen

This very post on Humans of Bombay introduces us to this pixie-cut woman who was abandoned by her parents, married off as a child and got raped by a relative, but is still determined to stay strong.

While she talks about being sexually abused by her own uncle, she opens our eyes to the fact that most of the sexual harassment cases are actually domestic violence incidents, which somehow manage to stay under the carpet.

Either the victims are too afraid to speak their minds, or the family pressure succumbs their voices. Whatever the reason be, the sad part is that the voice remains unheard.

However, the beauty of this story lies where she speaks about not losing hope and nurturing new dreams. She says, “I want to dance, I want to swim, I want to fly and believe it or not, my background has given me the strength of wings to achieve all of that.”
