P.S.A.: People’s Reproductive & Procreative Plans Are None Of Your Business

I don’t know where this comes from, but a lot many of us have an innate tendency of being very nosy in other people’s personal affairs. One of these very personal matters is ‘having babies’. I mean, isn’t it a very common instance watching people bombarding other people with questions like ‘When are you having a baby?’, ‘Why don’t you plan another baby?’ or worse still, ‘Why aren’t you having a baby?’
Exasperated by similar thoughts, Emily Bingham, a US-based writer, ranted on her Facebook post a Public Service Announcement that we all need to take very very seriously. She attached a random googled ultrasound picture in the post which effectively grabbed everyone’s attention.
“You don’t know who is struggling with infertility or grieving a miscarriage or dealing with health issues. You don’t know who is having relationship problems or is under a lot of stress or the timing just isn’t right. You don’t know who is on the fence about having kids or having more kids. You don’t know who has decided it’s not for them right now or not for them ever. You don’t know how your seemingly innocent question might cause someone grief, pain, stress or frustration,” says her now viral Facebook post.
When we come to think of her words on a serious note, they do make us feel how insensitive we come across when we launch such questions at people.
She also goes ahead to talk about her personal experience… “I’m 33. I’ve never been married. I’ve had people say things like, ‘You’re getting older, do you want to have kids? Your clock is ticking.’ I think I finally felt mad enough about it to say something.”
Let us all be a bit sensible and curb our snooping curiosities from now on. Shall we?
