Pregorexia: Harmful Eating Disorders Among Mums-to-be

Celebrities worldwide are always admired for how quickly they gain the slim-self after pregnancy. Recently Kate Middleton was in news for her ‘post-baby weight loss regime’. Closer home, we can think of Malaika Arora Khan, Sonali Bendre, Karisma Kapoor, etc. And if celebs fail to reach this expectation level, they are mocked down just like Poor Kim Kardashian. Because of this new trend, there is a pressure on women to get their pre-pregnancy bodies as soon as possible after delivery which ultimately gives rise to eating disorders such as ‘Pregorexia’.
Celebrities have their own personal trainers and nutritionists. But for the other moms, this pressure to slim down in a healthy way is impossible. All they can think of is eating less, exercising more and losing weight at the earliest.
An eating disorder like this during pregnancy can have huge consequences on both mother and the baby. It can cause low birth weights, birth defects and vitamin deficiencies in the new-born. But usually nature is quite determined to give baby what it needs, even at the expense of mother’s health. So if the baby will take calcium or any other nutrients from mum’s body, her health will deteriorate.
Note the following 3 common symptoms of Pregorexia:
- Dieting during a pregnancy, or not eating enough to support a healthy pregnancy,
- Over exercising during pregnancy, and
- Avoiding gaining the necessary weight during pregnancy.
