There is an eerie way ‘transgender’ people are seen in our country. Actually, the problem lies in ‘understanding’ them. That is, if at all society attempts to understand them! And even the frugal numbers of people, who try to do so, do so in the wrong light.
But here’s an inspiring example of a mother who fiercely stood by her daughter who was born as a son.
Meet Naina Singh, a 16-year old girl living in the body of a boy. Born as Krishna Singh, she is trying to emerge free out of the body that she doesn’t relate with. She has adopted a feminine name, wears a salwar-kameez to school, and is receiving hormone replacement therapy. Also, she plans to undergo sex-change operation once she’s done with her 12th Grade exams.
“Actually my real name is Krishna. I was born a man, but I’m transitioning. I’ve come out twice, once as gay and once as a transgender. And every time I do it, it’s like ripping a band-aid off,” says Naina in one of her Youtube videos, through which she discusses the hardships that come the way of transgender people.
This child, irrespective of her gender, is being able to ‘break-free’ and ‘breathe’ due to her mother, Mishi Singh, who, instead of reacting absurdly to the situation, took her daughter to the counselors as soon as she found out about it.
“I thought he was gay, but my worst nightmare was he’d be a girl. I didn’t want him to suffer. I’d show him remote-control cars in toy shops but he’d want stuffed toys. He kept asking for wigs, even made ones with ribbons,” said Mishi.
Besides answering the innumerable questions about Naina that she’s bombarded with frequently, she also goes so far as to say that her daughter has ‘pretty legs’.
It is probably the love and support of this mother that pulled her 16-year old daughter Naina out of her depression and suicidal attempts. So much so, that today Naina looks up to a bright future post her operation.
After all, there’s nothing doubting the miracles that a mother’s love can perform. Is there?
