Who Knew Ms. Hermione Granger Could Be Black?!

Michael Jackson’s song Black or White was running through my head when I read that what if Hermione was Black? Or mixed race? Or brown?
Oh my god, Komal! You can’t just ask people why they are white!
Hard to imagine. It’s funny, though, that even in the books it is nowhere mentioned that she is a particular “race”. We know that she’s born and brought up in London, has frizzy hair, and is intelligent.
The Harry Potter Goddess J.K. Rowling agrees.
Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione ? https://t.co/5fKX4InjTH

Let’s ask ourselves a question. When we started reading Harry Potter books, did we or did we not imagine all lead characters as white? Of course, we did!
Harry was white. Check
Ron was a ginger. Check
Draco was white, of course, he had white hair. Check.
Hermione had brown hair!
There is always a default assumption that the lead character in a book will always be white, beautiful, tall and handsome. We let our minds deceive the character in the book. I remember when I’d started reading Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird”, I had no idea that the lead character was a black girl. I blame myself, and throw a little slime on the society, too.
She’s also an appropriate candidate for fighting against stereotypes and discrimination. She was a muggle born, fought for animals, even house elves! Remember SPEW? (Harry Potter fans will know what I’m talking about).
In the upcoming theatre production of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, a black actor Noma Dumezwani, is cast as Hermoine! And that’s exactly why this question arose, years after the final movie came out.
