Shani Shingnapur Temple Finally Open To Women. Victory Or Not?
- JWB Post
- April 9, 2016
After rigorous activism, the inner sanctum of the Shani Shingnapur Temple in Maharashtra is finally open to women.
Trupti Desai, head of Bhumata Ranragini Brigade said, “This is a huge victory”. She has led the protests against the ban for months.
“We have always said that this was a fight for gender equality,” Desai told Times Nowshortly
Women began praying at the Shani Shingnapur Temple on Friday afternoon. Well, it sure seems like a great victory. Remember we talked about the High Court’s response?
However, looks like it’s not that big a victory, after all.
Many followers at the temple were determined on keeping the women away from the temple even after the Bombay High Court ruling declared that women were to be granted permission.
While the women were fighting to get into the temple, the men stopping them were threatened with the possibility of their losing their right to enter the inner sanctum.
Hmmph. Long way to go.
