JWB is taking the opportunity of International Women’s day to focus on women’s sexual health. We talk about women’s issues, menstruation, sex, rights, duties, but somewhere between these lines, we forget to acknowledge our sexual health.
Every day, for the next one week, we will invite you to put forward your questions about maintaining sexual health; and Dr. Saatiish and Dr. Viniita Jhuntrraa will be providing you with apt medical advice. We met the duo of Vivan Hospital for Sexual Health and asked them some basic questions about a woman’s sexual health.
Dr. Saatiish Jhuntrraa and Dr. Viniita Jhuntrraa talked about the five essential ingredients for a woman to maintain her sexual health.
First is proper sleep. Girls, handling home and work is great. Yes, we agree you’re a multi-tasker, but please prioritize your sleep. It is the gateway to good health.
Secondly, indulge in moderate exercise daily. It keeps your metabolism and blood circulation going.
Third, avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol. Come on, it’s for your own good!
Fourth, manage your stress. The more stressed you are, the more are the chances of the deterioration of your sexual health.
Fifth, practice safe sex. If you’re sexually active, please use protection!
Dr. Saatiish Jhuntrraa: Practicing safe sex is essential, especially now that teens are having sex at a very young age.
Me: Teenagers visit you, too?
Dr. Viniita: Yes, they do. There are those who have problems like pain during periods, breast size problem, PCOD (Poly-cystic Ovary Disorder) and even teenage pregnancy.
Dr. Saatiish: Which is why sex education is important.
Me: Apart from teens, what are some of the most common problems women deal with?
Dr. Viniita: Girls come to us for pre-marital counseling, with questions about consummating, contraceptives, etc.
Dr. Saatiish: If there’s one contraceptive I’m strictly against, it is the ‘morning-after’ pill! Take other contraceptive options, they are all safe.
Me: What are the chances of contraceptives failing?
Dr. Saatiish: The most effective form of contraception are oral ones. They have 1 in 10,000 chance of failure, while on the other hand, condoms have thirty times more chances of failure.
Me: Wow! That’s a lot! Apart from pre-marital counseling, what questions do women approach you with?
Dr. Viniita: Women face problems like ‘pain during sex’, ‘lack of desire for consummating’, reduction or enlargement of breasts. Some girls during their courtship period also get scar treatment, hymenoplasty, etc.
Me: Is PMS (Pre-menstrual Syndrome) a growing problem amongst girls?
Dr. Saatiish: PMS is highly stressed on condition nowadays, and seriously speaking, we sometimes aggravate the problem by constantly accentuating it.
Me: By the way, how important is communication in sex?
Dr. Viniita: The couple must be very honest about their problems with one another. Especially today, when people don’t have time, I suggest couples to keep a mandatory ‘half’ hour only for communication. They’ll then see how not only sexual, but all kinds of problems will resolve.
Me: What about those who are shy? Not only around their partners but even around doctors?
Dr. Saatiish: For such people, and those who don’t have access to sexologists, consult us online. Their reports and conversations with us are strictly confidential.
