Jaipur’s Deepa Lalwani Talks About Becoming A Designer-by-Chance!
- JWB Post

Fashion always takes us back to our roots, and that’s what Deepa Lalwani feels. She doesn’t come from a fashion designing background, and only decided to test the waters by trading in clothing. However, she’s now taken up to create her own designs.
Jaipur is all about Hand Block Prints, and so is her style. She uses the prints on skirts, maxis, shirt dresses, crop tops, and what not! I visited her and sat for a chat with her.
On not being ‘designed’ for a 9 to 5 job
I followed the instructions of the society and completed my MBA, but it never really felt quite right. 9 to 5 job and I were just NOT meant to be. I later understood that I was a creative person, and so I was destined to be a designer.
I ended up working for a year, being completely directionless, hence discovering my higher calling.
And so it begins!
“Crimson” began when I once thought of experimenting with my mother’s saree. I loved the prints on it, and so I made myself a dress. I got a lot of appreciation, and that’s when I decided what my next step was going to be. I rummaged through my wardrobe and dug out old clothes and experimented with them.
I then took it up professionally.
Jaipur as the potential market
Jaipur is always willing to experiment. And given that this is where Block Prints were born, I mingled with the tradition of Jaipur. In fact, I plan to have my own store, soon!
Inspiration?
My father. He’s always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. He always knew that I would be an entrepreneur, even before I knew it!
On the pressure of getting married
Yeah, my family wants me to get married and settle down, and while they are looking for an ideal match, they know that both my career and marriage are of utmost priority to me.
Her designs
I’m participating in the Bandra Fest (a Flea Market) in Mumbai this April. One can also shop from my Instagram page!

Importance of dressing up
“Dressing well is a form of good manner.” It’s very important to be confident in your skin. Happiness is complimentary with confidence.
