Look at this mustache key hanger! *Plans to gift it to lady boss*
Oh, you’re here! Sorry, but I got carried away with all this work on Art Beat.
is a website that makes artworks more affordable for people. It is owned by 23-year-old Bangalorite, who is also an artist. All the work on Art Beat is Nishka’s work, and it is goddamn awesome!
She’s always been quite an artistic one, but when she was denied admission to her dream art institute, she went forward with studying Business Management at Christ University even though she hated it.
Well, like it or not, it made her the owner of Art Beat which happens to be one of Bangalore’s most creative e-commerce art studios.
Here’s our little email rendezvous with Nishka.
What did you first draw that made you understand that Art is the one for you?
I’ve been drawing since I was around ten years old. I fell in love with art only once I started painting. I love colours, so when I could use that to express myself, I realized how passionate I am about this.
When I used to colour in my colouring books, I was always yelled at for leaving too many blank spaces. Sorry ma’am! *Cringes*
What is the concept of Art Beat?
Art Beat runs with a very simple concept – I want to make art more reachable & affordable. My aim is to make sure more and more people get to buy art. I also want to make art a part of our everyday life, so I try to mix art with utility.
What is the process of the artwork becoming a product?
When I make a product, I first analyze if I myself would like to buy it. When it comes to design, I ensure that the design is something I’d put up on my walls. I love colour so that surely comes in.
What artworks do you have on your walls?
I have almost everything that I’ve made in these three years up on my walls – from my clocks to my paintings. It also includes my first few paintings that I made when I was learning how to paint. My favourite is a painting I received from a little girl while judging a competition!
My artwork barely even made it on to the fridge….
I’m excited to hear about your experience at TedEx! How was it?
TedEx was fun! My idea was to help people understand how colours can just make people happy. I drew out a grid on canvas and made everyone paint a grid. The only thing was – I told them to try and connect it to the other person’s grid. This created a beautiful picture! It was early in the morning, and the energy with just a few people was amazing! I love doing such things. You get to meet a lot of new people, and that helps you understand your customers better!
Your website is doing well, but how do you promote it?
It mostly happens through word of mouth, Facebook and my exhibitions.
Ah! Word of mouth, like the good ol’ days.
Running an e-commerce website requires funds. How do you fund it?
I have been funding myself for the past three years. Whatever goes into Art Beat is from all the sales that I make. It’s quite old-school, but I like it as it keeps me in the check of my accounts, and the reality is clear.
#WomanPower
We live in a world dominated by men. Did you face any difficulty communicating with vendors who provide you with coaster and key chains?
Not at all! I’m lucky to have the perfect team of people who give me exactly what I want!
Nishka has also designed interiors for lots of companies. Uh, wow!
What’s one company that you’d love to paint for?
So many in my mind But till date, I love the OnePlus & Roadrunnr’s work I’ve done!
So you went forward with commerce instead of art. How did you find the shift from arts to commerce and back?
I was always in commerce, so really it was a shift from commerce to Art Beat. It was good as I had an understanding of how the business works. Art came to me through all my years of practice.
What three things would we find on your bucket list?
Opening a store, and then two more stores!
Any tips for aspiring art entrepreneurs?
Just go ahead and start. It’s never late, and there’s no sense in over thinking it. If it works, great! If it doesn’t – it’s okay cause now you know why.
Take notes, people.
What do you doodle while talking to someone over the phone?
That’s a good question! I’m always drawing while talking to someone. It’s usually random. Like patterns!
I was only obsessed with writing my name, hehe!
Who is your inspiration?
There are many, but I’m a huge Leonid Efremov fan!
Googling him RN.
If you would visit an art museum, what painting would you observe for very long?
Any work by Leonid Afremov! His work is amazing.
Update: His work is awesome! So pwetty!
What is the one color medium you love to work with?
I love acrylics!
What are some skills taught in business studies at the University that you found helpful in art entrepreneurship?
Everything. From accounts to marketing is only ‘cause I learned it in Christ University. I would have been lost otherwise!
What kind of environment do you like to have when you’re painting?
I love watching videos, listening to music. Just the regular.
Since Nishka wasn’t keeping well (Get well soon!), our conversation took place via email. Had it been possible, I’d have asked her to Skype and probably make a tiny doodle of me. What can I say; I enjoy posing for drawings, teehee!
PS, if you want to buy her work that I think you’ll love, you can find it here.
