Dear Aspiring Professors, Take A Chill Pill – Says Smriti Irani

Earlier you had to clear the National Eligibility Test (NET). Not anymore!

Thanks to the HRD Ministry, Smriti Irani, the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday amended its regulation on faculty recruitment and relaxed the minimum eligibility conditions for appointment of assistant professors.

Smriti Irani said, “There has been a long-standing challenge faced by researchers/aspiring teachers. The UGC today in conjunction with the government has taken this decision.”

So now if you’re a PhD scholar or registered as one before 2009, you can apply for lectureship. This PhD degree should be awarded in regular mode and the research thesis should be evaluated by at least two external examiners. In addition to this, you will be required to appear for a viva-voce along with least two published papers based on the Ph.d thesis in research journals.

But that’s not a big deal, right?

And, there’s good news for female and differently-abled research scholars. They will get three years instead of two to complete M.Phil degrees. Also, women candidates will be provided maternity, child care leave for up to 240 days once in the entire duration of their M.Phil or Ph.D degrees.
