Welcome, Mumbai to the list.
According to the stats, two Mumbai children under 12 years of age get sexually abused every day. This survey is the result of data collected from the police and few hospitals authorised under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). In 2016, 80 cases have already been filed.
According to Mumbai Mirror: “While 678 cases of child sex abuse were registered in all of 2014 by the police, the tally for 2015 had nearly trumped that number in October itself when the total cases stood at 677. The figures for the last two months of 2015 have not yet been processed by the police.”
A Mumbai Police’s spokesperson told Mumbai Mirror, “It’s a serious issue, especially the increasing rate of rape cases involving children below 12 years of age. We are conducting awareness drives in densely populated areas of the city and holding workshops in schools too.”
Amusingly, it is the slum kids who become the easy target for abusers. Slums like Dharavi, Mankhud, Govandi, and Shivaji Nagar have a higher rate of reporting sexual abuse cases.
So, what can be the possible solution? Definitely not making child sex dolls, pinheads.
