This Gujarat Village Bans Mobile Phones For Unmarried Women

Starting February 12, the head of Suraj village in Mehsana district (Gujarat) has banned unmarried women from using mobile phones.

Say whaaaaat?

If an unmarried woman is caught using a phone, she will be fined Rs 2,100. And the informers will be rewarded with Rs 200.

Suraj village sarpanch Devshi Vankar said, “Why do girls need a cell phone? The Internet is a waste of time and money for a middle-class community like ours. Girls should better utilize their time for study and other works.”

It all started with an alcohol de-addiction campaign for men initiated by the Thakor community, which gradually extended to women’s lifestyle.

Is it supposed to be some kind of revenge?

Raikarnji Thakor, a community leader from north Gujarat, said, “Alcohol consumption by men and cell phone use by women create a lot of disturbance in society. Young girls get misguided. It can break families and ruin relationships.”

We clearly need to educate our rural communities.
