Much have been spoken on LGBTQ rights in India in the last year. 2016 was surely a year where many people across the country stood for their rights. It was also a year where people “living in the closet” came out and owned up to their true identity.

In anticipation to receive what the LGBTQ community has been fighting for, 2017 surely has kickstarted on a much positive note.

For the first time ever, a transsexual woman, Anjali Ameer, will be playing the lead role in a mainstream South Indian movie.

Renowned Malayalam actor Mammootty announced that he recommended his director to cast Anjali as his co-star in the film.

While most members of the LGBTQ community are shown in a stereotypical role in most movies, Anjali playing the lead is a historic move and is worth applauding.

In an interview with India Times, Anjali revealed how her family opposed her initially when she told them about her true identity and feelings.

“After completing my class 10th, I started trying to undergo this change. Initially, it wasn’t acceptable for my family. So, I ran away from home. I lived with transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of real personal struggle.”

However, she also stated that now her family is supporting her and is her strength.

For Anjali, it was her lifelong wish to be an actress, and with this upcoming movie, this dream will become a reality and will inspire a million others to believe in their dreams.

The film will come out in the theaters in Tamil and Malayalam in the second half of 2017.
