It appears that the world is slowly acknowledging the presence of transgender people, whose voices were earlier often left unheard and at the time, brutally stifled.
National Geographic has made history by featuring the image of 9-year-old Avery Jackson, a transgender person on its cover for January 2017 and the photo looks simply stunning.
The cover photo is captioned by a few loosely strung words of Jackson which say it all.
“The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy.”
Experts see this transition of the magazine as a huge step towards gender equality and one that highlights a critical issue which has often been discussed in an entirely hush-hush way.
The issue, which is titled as ‘gender revolution’ will examine and analyze the cultural, social, biological and personal aspects of gender identity. Instead of interviewing celebrity figures from the transgender community, a mainstream magazine is trying to tell the stories of people from everyday life and their trials and journey.
A documentary by Katie Couric will also be released, covering virtually everything that encompasses the subject of gender revolution. The documentary will make its debut on February 6 on the National Geographic channel.
This step taken by the world renowned magazine is indeed worth applauding as with a great stroke of ingenuity, they have brought this discussion about gender issues right at the doorstep of the entire world. Can’t wait to read the January issue of the magazine!
