At 74, This Female Is Nominated For The ‘Coach Of The Year Award’

I remember how my coach used to be the happiest person on this planet, whenever I bagged a medal in any Table Tennis tournament. More than he being appreciated for his contribution, he found happiness in his students’ victory. But now when I look back in time I wish, he was equally recognized for all the hard work and labor he had always put in us.

So while reading about Ans Botha who is better known as ‘Tannie Ans’, I reminisced old days and felt really happy. This 74-year-old female coach stole hearts back in August after she coached Wayde Van Niekerk, who broke American Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old 400 m world record at the Rio Olympics this year.

As a result of her remarkable contribution, Ans Botha has been nominated in the ‘Coach of the Year’ category at this year’s South Asian Sports Awards.

Van Niekerk’s whose run was considered by many experts to be the best of the Games was glorified even further when his coach was introduced to the world. After Van Niekerk’s historic run of 43.03 seconds, Botha said that breaking 43 seconds was on her mind before the race.

And we couldn’t have agreed more especially with the kind of performance Niekerk showed.

Tannie Ans, who works at Bloemfontein, says that she has a few more promising sprinters under her watch who are capable of delivering big things.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula announced the nominees on Monday morning, and Van Niekerk had to be and was obviously one of the first to congratulate his coach.

P.S. The South Asian Sports Awards will take place on November 27.
