The Women & Child Development Ministry (WCD) has suggested that soon; a portal will be released where women can complain about being harassed by cyber trolls and the attacker in question shall be punished severely.

The portal scheme budgeted at Rs 244.32 crore is named, ‘Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children’ (CCPWC), shall come under the Nirbhaya Fund, and will be co-developed by the home ministry and the WCD Ministry.

A WCD official stated, “The home ministry gave us the scheme, under which there will be a portal where women who are harassed online will be able to register their complaints. The portal is sanctioned, and the cyber cell of the home ministry will monitor the portal, and act on the complaints.”

Maneka Gandhi, the WCD minister, also spoke at a press conference about the abuse women face online and hinted that a separate unit should be made by the Home Ministry to handle such grievances.

The ministry has also listed down certain guidelines that matrimonial websites must follow

The official also informed that guidelines will be three-pronged.

“There were a lot of reports of fraudulent practices from matrimonial websites, and harassment as reported by single women. These draft guidelines that were decided in the last couple of weeks will be soon notified under the Information Technology Act, 2005,”

The proposed guidelines will mandate the submission of the ID proof before allowing the person to access profiles on the matrimonial sites.

Also, a nodal officer will have to be appointed by every matrimonial site to deal with the complaints placed by the women. The WCD will also make the information public after periodic review and redressal.
