Hindi Email Addresses Might Soon Become A Reality

The Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Rajiv Bansal, proposed a wonderful move to the tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Rediff.
Considering the fact that till today, almost 80 percent of the Indian population is not fluent in reading and writing English, the idea of having email addresses in local languages (Hindi, to begin with) sounds brilliant.
Not only will this increase the penetration of Internet in the rural and semi-urban areas, but it will also allow us to flaunt cool desi email ids. Yay!
“The Bharat Net project will connect 2,50,000 gram panchayats through high-speed Internet in the next few years, and people should be able to utilise it when it reaches them,” said Rajiv Bansal.
In the same meeting, the executives of the aforementioned tech giants expressed their appreciation and support towards the idea, whilst also suggesting that the government of the nation should not make this mandatory and instead lead by example.
While Microsoft says the latest versions of its software support so-called internationalized email addresses, Gmail started recognising IDs that contain accented or non-Latin characters such as in Chinese or Devanagari in 2014. The company had posted a blog saying that Gmail users can send emails to and receive them from people who have these characters in their addresses.
