Jaipur Teen Entrepreneurs Boiled The Green Business Idea In The Golden Pot
- JWB Post
- June 28, 2016
While many follow the conventional path (school-college-work) in life, the Kaushik Sisters, Sudhiksha and Gauravi, ages 16 and 10 respectively have broken the norms. The Kaushik Sisters have created an instrument called, ‘The Golden Pot’ that creates manure out of the household waste. This duo is Jaipur’s most recent team of young entrepreneurs, who inspire to work for the long-term survival of the planet.
How did you come up with the idea, ‘The Golden Pot’?
A few months ago, we attended a workshop on garbage segregation, where we were shown a composter called, ‘Khamba.’ It seemed like a product that every household required because it made the “best out of waste.” We started selling the Khamba along with other recyclable products at a stall in our school. It didn’t work out very well as it was priced above what an average household was willing to pay for. Thus, we thought of creating our own composter, which would be cheap and effective at the same time. That’s how the Golden Pot was born!
Why is your initiative called, ‘The Golden Pot?’
For two significant reasons: one is literal and the other metaphorical. It is because the pot is golden in color. And, it converts waste into something useful such as manure, which can be compared with gold. Gold also represents treasure (something desirable)!
Where can we buy the Golden Pot?
Unfortunately, we haven’t started to sell these pots commercially. We’re still in the process of lowering the prices and making potential buyers (possibly, everyone!) aware of our product, its uses, and benefits. Once the marketing is done successfully, we have planned to sell it in the market for it to be easily available.
How is the Golden Pot priced?
Currently, it’s Rs. 650 for 2 pots. We advise all households to purchase at least 2 pots as it’s quite sufficient for a family of four.
How much time does it take to convert waste into manure?
It takes only 15 to 20 days for the kitchen waste to convert into manure!
What are the regular uses of manure, away from the farms?
It can be used to grow healthy plants, wherever and whenever. Some people want plants for its aesthetic use while the others simply like eating home-grown organic herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Anybody can use it!
How do you wish to take your initiative forward?
Our first step towards progress is educating people about sustainable development. We want everybody to be aware of The Golden Pot and how useful it is. Also, we’re planning a launch event. Our long-term target is to make our venture a part of the ‘Swacch Bharat Abhyan’. We want each and every household to use the Golden Pot.
How can other people be a part of your project?
As of now our project needs to win in the public competitions, so their support and votes will be most helpful at the stage. The general public can also watch videos on YouTube and share them to make their friends aware of the existence of The Golden Pot!
How much time a week do you give to this project?
We don’t have a fixed timetable for our initiative, but it’s mostly weekends!
How do you balance your studies and this project?
The Golden Pot is an idea that relates to subject matters such as Biology and Environmental Science. So, it doesn’t seem like a waste of time or a hindrance. Both of us like to have a balanced life. We like to study and play sports, sing, dance and work for the betterment of the community.
What age gap do you, sisters have; and what challenges does it create regarding working together?
We have an age gap of 6 years, but that doesn’t create any challenges as such! Gauravi is like my junior. She still needs to learn about a lot of things, and I am only mentoring her.
What do you want to do in the future?
I want to be a lawyer whereas my sister is interested in being a playback singer.
Why should we work for the environment?
The Environment has been quite the controversial issue across the world. I’ve been studying it since Grade 6. We didn’t have any conservation drives in school. Our teacher motivated us to start it.
What your environment philosophy?
I don’t think we can reduce expansion of our lifestyles, so we need to come up with remedies to improve our lives for sake of the future generations. Sometimes, there are simple solutions to big problems, but it is about the application.
Do you have a message for other teenagers on being innovative?
We must all believe in what we do! Because ‘Those who mind it don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind it.’
