Remember when we told you about how union minister Maneka Gandhi had waged a battle against online trolls who harass women? Just a few days after making the announcement, the action will be taken against such people. Gandhi has set up a cyber cell to keep an eye on online bullies.
The cyber cell will have senior bureaucrat Chetan Sanghi at its helm, and it will be monitoring the activities of internet bullies. Earlier, Gandhi had also urged women to mail her about instances when they were trolled on the internet by receiving sexist and misogynistic messaged and just within one day; she had received a lot of complaints from women.
After the National Commission for Women (NCW) expressed doubts over the fact that how the internet could be controlled, the ministry has now issued a clarification.
In its clarification, the Ministry has said that there would be no patrolling on the internet. It would be only addressing the complaints of women who had been harassed on the internet and of those who had sent a mail to the ministry in this regard.
This move is aimed to control the huge chunk of offensive tweets and messages that come on the internet every day. Of course, a large chunk of these messages are aimed at women and at times are vitriolic attacks on them.
Gandhi also met Mahima Kaul on Friday, who is the head of public policy, Twitter India. They have decided that a contact person will be designated by Twitter, who can be contacted by the ministry after it gets complaints of trolling on the internet.
