The Number Of Women In Indian Workforce Has Been Drastically Decreasing

At a time when we often speak how women are slowly equaling men in different spheres of the society, data from the National Sample Survey (68th) round indicates otherwise. According to the data, in the year 2011-2012, 24.8 of every 100 women worked in rural areas.

At the same time when it came to men, the figure was 54.3. In urban areas, the statistics were even worse, with only 14.7 working women.

Another worrying fact is that the overall participation of working women in India has also fallen drastically with only 36 per cent women being part of the workforce in 2012. This was much less than 49 percent, the figure in 2005.

Given the fact that employment makes women more self-sufficient and also results in increasing their role in decision making, this is indeed a worrying fact that over the years the participation of women in the workforce is decreasing.

Experts say that one of the reasons for this decline is that the number of suitable jobs for women in rural areas has dwindled over the last few years. The fact that the decrease in farming related jobs is another reason behind this sorry state of affairs. It has been seen through research that in most cases, women in rural areas prefer jobs nearer to their home, and that is why farming fits the bill perfectly.

A report published by the International Labour Organisations in 2013 found out that unequal pattern of men and women in the workforce is a common link that connects almost all the South Asian countries. The report goes on to say that this is because of age-old conventions and beliefs which restrict women to only the house and doesn’t see working women in a good light.

As a result, women have no choice but to be engaged in those occupations the approval of which is given by the society. It’s about time that we break away from these suppressive beliefs because as we all know, no developing country can register growth without the participation of women.
