This Chai Wali Wins The Businesswoman Of The Year Award

*alarm rings*
The morning. A cup of tea. The crunchy newspaper. Slurp.
Most of the people in my family start their day with a cup of chai, and I guess this is the same with the most of the Indian families.
In a country like Australia where people are more drawn to coffee than tea, it wasn’t easy for the 26-year-old Uppma Virdi, who goes by the name Chai wali, to spread her love for tea.
She isn’t a full-time restaurateur or a cafe owner but runs an online business with occasional pop-ups and workshops. She is, in fact, a lawyer working for a firm in Melbourne.
While tea places can be found at every corner in India, the same can’t be said for Australia. And this gave Uppma the perfect opportunity to start a business two years ago, and there’s no looking back since then.
In the midst of noise about the Pakistani Chai wala getting a modeling contract, this Indian Australian chai wali won the title of the Businesswoman of the Year at a ceremony in Sydney.
It seems like 2016 is a golden year for chai walas/walis!
