This Poem Is The ‘Girls Power’ Lesson You Need

Do this and don’t do that- because you are a girl! Don’t eat like this, don’t walk like that, and don’t wear clothes that are revealing; do things that girls do – cook, clean and sleep.
Well, may I breathe? We’ve all faced these dos and don’ts in our lives, but for once can we just stand up for what we think is right? Till you and I can make up our minds, watch this Blythe Baird recite her poem- “Girl Code 101”.
The video was released two years back, but it still manages to clinch the souls of the viewers (the fact is nothing seems to have changed). In less than 3 minutes Blythe has managed to captivate the audience. The number of views has reached a massive 893,539 for all the right reasons. “We remember age 9, the first time we are cat-called. By age 12 others are calling us women before we had a chance to. At 13 years dad says wearing short skirts is like driving in the city without a seat belt,” she says in the poem.
Girl Code 101 is a powerfully written and impressively expressed poem. It talks about how women are expected to be submissive from a very young age, abiding by every instruction they are given about ‘How girls should be.’
“Give me decisions. A wordless wardrobe, an opinionless dress – give me a city where my body is not a public property.” Sure, we have chosen our direction, but now is the time we walk on those paths, Blythe sums up perfectly. Our clothes do not predict who we are, and the society shouldn’t do that either – That should be the Human Code 101.
