At Rio Olympics, too, we have seen that the women’s victory is being credited or compared to other men. Read here!
One of the best female football players, Marta Vieira da Silva of Brazil who is nailing it in the games, also faced the same issue.
“Marta is better than Neymar!” the fans called out in her “appreciation.” Marta was even asked if she’s a better player, after the match.
In a statement to the media, she disapproved this attitude by saying, “Marta is Marta, Neymar is Neymar,” and also talked about her comparison to Pele, one of the greatest Brazilian footballers. She also confessed how Pele himself referred her as, “Pele with a skirt.”
“We want the gold medal for ourselves, for our careers, for women’s soccer,” she said.
Marta’s game has encouraged women’s game in her country, but she still feels there’s a long way to go.
“A lot has to happen and evolve, and we know that, but the support is way bigger now compared to when I started playing.”
It’s time we stop comparing and start acknowledging the true spirit of a sportsperson regardless of their gender.
