Burkini Day Un’Veils’ The Rejection Of The Muslim Community In France

An organization called ‘Smile 13’ near Marseille has organized a Burkini Pride Day exclusively for Muslim women. The organization is hosting the event to “encourage women to join in with the community.”

The event will take place at Speedwater Park on 17th September 2016. Women attending the event are not allowed to wear two-piece swimsuits and “must be covered from the chest to the knees.”

While the burkini day is an empowering event for Muslim women, it has already managed to annoy some people.

Valerie Boyer, mayor of two Marseille districts, tweeted to condemn the event. She tweeted: “Sectarian claims in a water park: To say nothing and do nothing, is to become an accomplice!

The far-right Front National also dissed the event. Echoing Boyer, Stephane Ravier, a mayor of two other districts of Marseille, told BBC News the following:

“This Islamist day demonstrates that, outside of the comforting words of Muslim authorities, a certain number of Muslims are deciding among themselves to break away from our Republican model and put themselves outside our society.”

“Burqa, chador, abaya, niqab, hijab, doesn’t matter the name, they represent a confinement for a gender, a negation of the person, a prohibition of freedom a prohibition of equality and a prohibition of fraternity,” said Boyer from the Les Republicans group, in a statement.

Wearing a niqab is a religious and cultural practice for Muslim women. Following a certain religion and wearing certain types of clothes should not be banned under the name of providing equality. Women who wear hijabs or niqabs find this practice to be empowering and liberating at the same time.

We think that the burkini initiative can help the French community become more inclusive and accepting.
