In association with doctors of Birla Hospital, AEGIS Pvt. Ltd. conducted a First-aid workshop for the girls of Mahila ITI, situated in Banipark.
The doctors explained to girls how important the first few seconds immediately after the accident are. “The accident can take place anywhere – on the road, in the house, at an event that you’re attending. You need to be alert and act quickly. Every second is important,” said a Sr. Doctor.
The first thing one should do is to shake the person who’s succumbed to the injury, to check if he hasn’t lost his consciousness. Before we begin the first aid, it is important to call the ambulance.
The expert team then started talking about the basic life support techniques (BLS).
- A New Order for CPR, spelled C-A-B: chest compression, airway, and breathing.
Step one is chest compression that restores the blood circulation.
Make the person lie on the back. Make sure your touch is soft, because the neck could be broken. Locate the chest bone, kneel next to the person, lock the hands, and give strokes using the heel of your hands. Keep your elbows straight and let the pressure come from the shoulders. Speed is another factor which is must be taken care of. An average of 100-120 strokes per minute must happen in order to pump the blood.
The airway is the second step.
Gently tilt the person’s head back, and lift the chin forward to open the airway. Look for chest motion and normal breathing signs. Remember, gasping is not considered to be normal breathing. If you still sense the problem, continue compressing along with mouth-to-mouth breathing.
Breathing: Breathe for the person
Using the index finger and the thumb, block his nostrils and give him mouth-to-mouth respiration. Best is to keep compressing the chest alongside (let another person help you). Do five sets of compression and airway – 30 strokes per 2 mouth-to-mouth breathing. Keep a look at the chest motion, and see if the air has started passing through the nose. If a case of concern, use handkerchief or scarf.
Keep providing first-aid to the injured person until the medical help arrives.
2. In the case of choking, there are two quick ways you can help that person breathe again.
If the person is sitting, make him stand up straight. Reach right behind him and tightly wrap your arms around his stomach. Push him towards you with a maximum pressure that you can apply. Do it five times. The pressure from his belly will force out the stuck food in his windpipe.
The second way is to make the person bend forward while you knock on his back hard making the food come out.
We hope the information is useful for you. Share it with your family and friends to teach them the basics of first-aid.
