Laila Tyabji of Dastkar is all for promoting and reviving the Indian handicrafts. So when her 30-something selfies popped up on the internet the other day, it came as no surprise.
The photos, as you can see, show her donning various kinds of sarees. In an email, she told the HuffPost India how she called herself as “an almost extinct species who only wear saris.”
Wondering why she did all this? Actually, Laila joined hands with , a Facebook group devoted to promoting handlooms, for a month to promote sarees of all kinds.
She said, “I deliberately avoided the fancy, festive and heirloom sari in favour of the cottons one wears to work, and that usually get discarded and forgotten once they fade or tear. One month seemed a good span to show the range of different weaves, techniques and designs of everyday cotton handloom saris – from the subtlety of Chikan embroidery to the drama of a tribal Kotpad, from palest pastel to a hot chilly-red.”
According to her, a saree is the most favoured attire for special occasions such as weddings, festivals, and official functions. She said, “Which is another reason why I wanted to show that you can wear saris every day, and they can look appropriate, contemporary and fun.”
