Hulla On Deepika’s 12-Crore Fee Proves Wage Gap Hypocrisy Of B-town

Since the Internet is all abuzz with Deepika Padukone charging Rs. 12 crore to act in the upcoming movie Padmavati, it’s about time that we understand the wage disparity in Bollywood.

Charging 12 crores might make Deepika the India’s highest paid actress, but when we compare this amount with the pay cheques that her male counterparts in the tinsel town get, it looks paltry.

Yup, you heard it right!

12 crores are plain lackluster when it is compared with the Rs. 55 crore that Salman Khan charges for each movie that he does or even the amount that Deepika’s contemporaries such as Ranbir Kapoor (Rs. 20-25 crore) get paid for every film.

So, why this all hullaballoo over Deepika getting paid so much, if we can comfortably digest the fact that male actors get more than triple that amount?

I think it has to do with the fact that people automatically assume a woman being inferior to men when it comes to getting the same salary.

And, that’s why they will raise their eyebrows upon hearing that Deepika has managed to bridge that wage disparity to some extent and moved a little (not much) higher in the payment ladder.

But why only Deepika? Would you believe when you hear that Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, both of whom made their debut in Bollywood at the same time get paid Rs. 50 crores and 7 crores respectively?

Now, to be honest, I think Kareena has more hits under her belt than Hrithik but still gets paid 43 crores less than him. Examples such as these are scattered throughout the annals of Bollywood and after fervently championing the causes of gender equality, most of the male stars maintain a hypocritical silence when it comes to the wage gap.

It’s about time that instead of getting overawed by the fact that Deepika is getting Rs. 12 crore, the male stars should start being more vocal about the wage gap and do something about it.
