JWB Finds ‘Paradise’ With Lyric-Doodler Kalyani Nerukar & Coldplay

I like to call myself a very positive person, and if I had to thank someone for this positivity, it would, hands down, be Coldplay. Yeah, I mean the band. I cried when they came to Delhi without informing me (Yeah, I’m talking to you, Chris). I wrote an open letter to the world that was criticizing their video of Hymn For The Weekend.
Because, every time I ‘tried my best and didn’t succeed’ I was reminded that ‘We live in a beautiful world’, and that I wasn’t the only one who ‘dreamed of Paradise’. And while, at that, I thought I was the biggest fan of Coldplay, Kalyani Nerukar’s Doodle Riot bowled me over. Guess she’s standing in the line of meeting Coldplay way ahead of me, if they come to India this November.
This crazy Coldplay fan, who also happens to be an illustrator, started doodling songs of Coldplay on paper about a year ago, and today, she’s all over the internet, thanks to her illustrations that can sing.

Me: Before I stalk you because you’re going to lead me to meet Coldplay, tell me, where did this incredible idea come from?
Kalyani: Okay, I’m this crazy Coldplay fan, it’s been that way since I was in 8th standard. I was fixed on to the album Parachutes, and then, I started exploring their music. I was never an illustrator, though, we all doodle, don’t we? I was a mass media student, worked as a copywriter for two years, and one day, my boss saw me doodling in some corner of the office. He looked intently and said, “You should do more of this!”
Me: What is the next Coldplay song that you’ll be Doodling?
Kalyani: Strawberry Swing!
Me: Ah, one of my favorites! Do you have Coldplay playing in the background when you’re doodling their songs?
Kalyani: Every single time! He’s there in The Scientist doodle, too. That was my first Coldplay doodle, and really, it was randomly done.

Me: Oh, and in your “Us Against The World” doodle, is that you standing with Chris Martin?
Kalyani: Chris Martin is always in my head.

Me: What band would you like to doodle next?
Kalyani: I’ve already done a couple of Maroon 5 songs. I want to try John Mayer soon, though!
Me: Talk about one illustration where you doodled your heart out!
Kalyani: My personal favorite is this peacock doodle that I did. It took me four hours to complete it, and I didn’t even realize it. It had no outlines, nothing. It was just for me. A close second would be the ‘Clocks’ doodle.

Kalyani: Phone covers, Starbucks cups, helmets! My dream is to doodle on a wall.

Me: When you’re on the phone what are you usually doodling?
Kalyani: Well, mostly zentangles, these repetitive designs. It just comes naturally to me, or mandalas, they help me focus, they’re like meditation.

Me: Earlier your illustrations were black & white, and now you’ve switched to using a lot of colors. So, who is it that adds colors to your life?
Kalyani: I love the color! Earlier, I was using Inktober. I took it up to better my drawing skills. So, I’m already a very color-loving person. I just started using them recently.

Me: Has your family been supportive of your choice of career?
Kalyani: Well, it is an unconventional career, right? So, earlier I was in a job. And really, before this, I was having kind of an existential crisis. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life, and then I asked my mother if I could take a break. My mom said, “Go ahead.” I started doing my thing, but I realized that it wasn’t easy, monetarily. A lot of people still don’t know that I sell it.
All of my art is available on the website “Engrave”. An A4 print is available for Rs. 699 and an A3 size for 999.

Me: How long does it take you to finish one Doodle?
Kalyani: See, if it’s a lyrical doodle, it takes about two days, otherwise, a little less than that.
Me: Your sketches are mostly filled! What fills your:
Message box: A lot of messages from Coldplay fans, right now! While someone cannot believe that there’d be a bigger fan of Coldplay than themselves, one guy felt inspired to pick up a pen and start doodling!
Heart: A lot of gratitude! It was such a personal thing. It was just on my Facebook, but people from around the world are requesting me to do other less known Coldplay songs like “Green Eyes.”
Bag: Deodorant, stationery (of course), red lipstick, a small book that I doodle in, and a little cash, ‘cos I’m an artist, haha!
