Kim Bok Joo & Jeong Joon Hyung Are Giving JWB Relationship Goals The Korean Way!

So you guys probably know about my love for Korean entertainment by now. *Nervous laughter* What I have for you is something that melted my heart faster than candle wax.

Let me introduce you to a new K-Drama which I think is perfect for anyone and everyone to watch. It’s called Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. Starring Lee Sung Kyung as Kim Bok Joo and Nam Joo Hyuk as Jeong Joon Hyung, the series is inspired by the life of Olympic weightlifter Jang Mi Ran.

Lee Sung Kyung as Kim Bok Joo

Anyway, let’s go!

The story starts with a 21-year-old weightlifter who goes by the name of Kim Bok Joo. Bok Joo is not the usual petite girl you would expect in a Korean Drama. Bok Joo is a hard working girl who wants to make it to the Olympics one day to fulfill both father’s and her dream. And since she’s the best in the team, they call her the Weightlifting Fairy! Bok Joo is loud, ambitious, strong and a foodie! Bok Joo likes chicken, Song Joong Ki, Kim So Hyun, Soju (Korean alcohol) and her true love, weightlifting. Basically, Bok Joo is the most relatable person on the planet.

If this ain’t me!

Moving on, what’s a KDrama without a handsome hunk?!

Meet Jeong Joon Hyung, a 21-year-old swimmer who’s absolutely gorgeous! Joon Hyung is pretty much the nicest person you’ll ever meet. Joon Hyung likes teasing Bok Joo, being with Bok Joo, laughing with and at Bok Joo and basically everything in his life that involves Bok Joo. Joon Hyung is straight up boyfriend goals!

In the distance, you can hear girls like me hyperventilating. What a beauty! [insert heart eye emoji]

Despite being a national level swimmer, Joon Hyung suffers from start trauma which means he has problems starting a race while he’s swimming and often ends up losing the competition. Courtesy, his childhood. (Hint: It involves a very important person in his family) What’s a K-Drama without a sad backstory, right?

Despite all this, Joon Hyung continues to undergo therapy for his trauma and finally crosses paths with Bok Joo. And as usual, they’re poles apart but share a very special connection. Unlike other dramas, this one doesn’t have a male lead who thinks that the female lead is head-over-heels in love with him. Sure, Joon Hyung is aware of his attractiveness, but none of that seems to work on Bok Joo.

Amidst all the mush of a usual drama, this one specifically is bashing so many cliches. All thanks to the lead Joon Hyung. Is your girl cold? If you’re a Korean male lead in a drama, you’ll probably give her your jacket. But not Joon Hyung. He’ll ask you for your jacket. I kid you not, he will.

There you go. He legit gave Bok Joo a newspaper to cover herself instead of giving her his jacket! In just three different scenarios, Joon Hyung did everything a Korean male lead is NOT supposed to do. The lead guy can be a soft flower too, y’all!

And underneath all that hard exterior, Bok Joo is a softy who’s very often insecure around boys. There you have it. A perfectly soft couple that’s meant for each. Do you need more reasons to watch this show?

IDK about you or Bok Joo, but my heart is fluttering. A LOT!

Bok Joo and Joon Hyung are going to give you all the feels you’ve ever wanted in every single episode!

The bits that make it worth the watch are the ones where Joon Hyung is trying hard to get out of the friend zone, but Bok Joo unknowingly keeps pushing him back into it.

Someone, please tell Bok Joo that’s not what he meant. [cringe emoji]

Anyway, as a university student, I thought the drama was completely relatable. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo perfectly describes the hopes, fears, and aspirations of the new generation. And of course, there’s the romantic element that gives you goosebumps in a good way.

Thank you, Bok Joo and Joon Hyung for making these past few days so special for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed the emotional roller coaster that this drama has taken me through. I hope I find my Joon Hyung soon – and you find your Joon Hyung or Bok Joo too if you haven’t!

Until then,

Annyeong!

P.S. Do watch this drama and let us know what you thought of it!
