If you are one of those who feels that women are not competent enough to be in the army, then Brigadier General Zewdu Kiros Gebrekidan is here to change your belief.

After serving in the Ethiopian army for the last 30 years, she has been recently appointed as the Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations.

One of the first to break the gender barrier when it comes to the women in the army, Gebrekidan is an inspiration for the countless women who want to don the combat uniform.

She feels that apart from the regular responsibilities of an Army Commander, women are also extremely efficient in understanding the humane aspect of the plight of refugees and civilians who want help and support.

Gebrekidan has previously commanded both units having only women as well as platoons consisting of people from both the genders. She says that she has never discriminated or favored the officers serving under her on the basis of their gender and given equal responsibilities to both men and women.

She also expresses her concern over the fact that in most of the peacekeeping forces of the world, women are very less in number and men dominate them.

Gebrekidan says that leaving half the population out of the military simply based on their gender is not fair and is very discriminatory.

This attitude has to be changed because as it is evident from the example of Gebrekidan, women can become an integral part of the armed forces throughout the globe if they are given the opportunity.
