Maneka Gandhi’s Appeal To Protect Women From Online Trolling, Not Well-received

The National Commission for Women is not too happy with Maneka Gandhi. Why? Because she said that there should be a system in place to protect women from online trolling.
Apparently, when Gandhi, who is at the helm of the Women and Child Ministry, had suggested the commission to monitor trolls on twitter who seem to be serial offenders when it comes to harassing women, it didn’t go down well with the NCW.
Their argument is that how the internet could be regulated since there are billions of Twitter accounts, and it’s not physically possible to keep a check on all the tweets coming in.
Understood. But surely what can be done is that whenever a person reports about being harassed online and gives the account details of the people responsible, the administration can at least try to act on it. It’s better to try and say that I failed than not trying at all!
However, it appeared that Gandhi’s idea has managed to strike a chord with a substantial chunk of the women netizens with #IamTrolledhelp being the most trending hashtag of the day. Gandhi had asked women to e-mail their complaints to .
Given the fact that nowadays many crimes are occurring where stalkers keep a tab on women on the internet before attacking them physically and also not to mention the steady flow of sexually offensive profanities that women have to deal with, this is certainly a move that was long due.
Irrespective of what the NCW says, I think that this new initiative will be instrumental in helping many women who on a daily basis have to deal with trolls online.
And you know what? Gandhi will also be meeting representatives of Twitter, Facebook, and the police department to formulate a strategy that will help them to tackle online abuse.
Now, that’s surely something that needs to be applauded!
