Dipa Karmakar becomes the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics and has sealed a seat for the Rio Games after the winning performance at the final qualifying and test event.

Dipa secured a total score of 52.698 points in the qualifying event and confirmed her candidateship for the Artistic Gymnastics in the Rio Olympics to be held in August 2016.

Along with being the first Indian woman gymnast, she will also be the first Indian gymnast qualifying for the quadrennial extravaganza after 52 long years.

Only eleven Indian male gymnasts have taken part in the Olympics (two in 1952, three in 1956 and six in 1964), since  India’s independence.

In the official statement released by the International Federation of Gymnastics (Federation Internationale de Gymnastique), Dipa’s Rio Games qualification has been confirmed.

“Following the Women’s Qualification Competition at the Gymnastics Test Event in Rio, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) herewith confirms the list of nations and individual gymnasts that have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

Amongst the individual qualifiers in the list of women’s artistic gymnast who qualified for the Rio Games, Dipa has been listed as the 79th gymnast.

The 21-year-old athlete became the first female gymnast and the second Indian to bag a Bronze medal at the sixth Gymnastics Asian Championships in Hiroshima, last week.

Last year, Dipa won a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in Glasgow, Scotland becoming India’s female gymnast to bag a medal in the CWG.

We congratulate Dipa Karmakar for yet another victory and wish all the best for her future endeavors.
