Meet The Feminist Couple That Had Women And A Transgender Witnessing Their Wedding

Not everyone wants a lavish wedding like you see in Yash Raj Chopra’s movies. But some people have a simple wedding that ends up being extraordinary. 27-year-old Sruthi Krishna and her partner Ramnath‘s marriage is one such example.
The couple told their families that they wanted to go for a court marriage. Besides that, they also ditched gold jewelry for that made from cereals and grains!
Sruthi Krishna is pursuing her Ph.D. in Feminist Discourse in Public Sphere while Ramnath is pursuing his in Transgender Issues from Gujarat Central University.
The couple had only women as legal witnesses to their marriage. Their main witness was Sheethal Shyam, a transgender and LGBTQ activist in Kerala.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Sruthi spoke about their families being upset about the court wedding. She said, “No one could bear that they would not be getting a significant role to play in this wedding.”

The couples’ aim was to break the conventional norms of the patriarchal society by showing that women can perform main duties too. Inviting a transgender as a witness also helped them tell the society that everyone is equal and should be treated like one.
