Pooja Kashyap Is Fighting For Bhalaswa In Her Magic Bus

Pooja Kashyap is a fighter. And, no, I am not saying this to make this article seem just another feel good story that you will forget after reading.

When I imagine the challenges that this girl from a lower-middle-class family in New Delhi faced, I know that it takes a fighter to overcome them successfully and to find a footing in the society.

Pooja, her brother, and mother live over a small piece of land in Bhalaswa, a dingy ghetto near Delhi with garbage strewn all around it.

The children grow up around the unhygienic conditions and most often never step inside the four walls of a school.

Pooja’s father, who was a vegetable seller, had abandoned their family when she was a child and her mother works as a cook, earning a meager Rs. 9,000 every month.

But Pooja, courtesy her job with Magic Bus, a non-profit organization that works with slum children, is leading a silent revolution inside the ghetto.

She has managed to instill fresh confidence among girls from the minority community who earlier were not even allowed to step outside their homes.

Pooja simultaneously manages to earn and help her mother along with helping the children of Bhalaswa to become more confident.

She wants to pursue a career in development work and given how easily she manages to blend with the children and teach them important lessons about life through sports and other activities; it appears that she will excel in it, without much effort.

The fact that, in the last four years, Pooja has worked with more than 750 children and mentored around 27 youth leaders also speaks eons about her talent and tenacity.

We fervently hope that in spite of all the odds, Pooja touches the highest echelons of the world and one day her work is recognized globally to inspire many others like her.
