Rio 2016 Might See The Highest Participation Of Women Athletes Till Date

With the Olympics knocking at our doors, all eyes are on the sports authorities of various countries who will have the last word on their respective delegations who will be finally boarding the plane to Rio. This year is also historic for the reason that 2016 might be the year of female athletes.

The chances are that Rio 2016 will see the highest participation of female athletes till date. According to a survey by Refinery 29, this year around 45 percent of the participants in the games will be women, which is a huge achievement when it comes to gender equality in sports.

But it could be fairly said that after the London Olympics in 2012, it became evident that the gap between male and female sportspersons was slowly closing in. In the 2012 Olympics, women sportspersons from the USA won the twice number of medals than their male counterparts, which was a phenomenon first of its kind.

And staying true to its reputation, this year out of the 555 athletes who will be participating in Rio 2016 from the US, 292 are women. So this means that even in the lineup, the female athletes are outnumbering men.

2012 was also the year when for the first time, female sportspersons from Saudi Arabia participated in the Olympics and this year the country has already announced that it will be sending a team of 4 female athletes. With Saudi Arabia, a country where gender equality is almost of a far-fetched dream falling in line, this is surely a huge step ahead.

Wouldn’t it be great if we find out that out the approximate 10,000 athletes who will be participating in the Olympics starting from August 5, women outnumber men?

While that’s something that only time will tell, but it’s surely becoming evident that sports are finally starting to give women sportspersons their due recognition.
