Sangeeta Juneja Speaks To JWB About Being Rajasthan’s First Female Gallerist
- JWB Post
- January 3, 2016

It was a cold wintery afternoon on the day we made our way to the “Juneja Art Gallery”. Now, we’d heard a lot about it, but never had the chance to visit it. Well, finally the day was here! The Juneja Art Gallery is also listed among some of the top places to visit in Jaipur.
Art lovers, this post, is especially for you. I was warmly welcomed by Sangeeta Juneja, the founder of Juneja Art Gallery, the brain behind the idea. I walked into a tapestry of emotions recreated on canvas. We took a tour of the gallery and tried to reciprocate what the artist might have intended to do.
Before we began discussing her career, we observed a somewhat peaceful vibe in her gallery. Sangeeta sat beside a granite pond that had a little over hundred fish of all kind. As soon as she seated herself, the fish glided through the water and opened their tiny beaks. No wonder it felt peaceful.
JWB – How did the idea of starting a gallery occur to you?
Sangeeta – I’ve been a painter since school. I remember how I was always regarded as the best, and I even used to win prizes for it. It was the easiest thing I could do! Besides, after I got married, I had ample time, and I decided to put it all to good use! So, it’s been for twenty-one years now, and I don’t see a reason to stop.
JWB – Tell us about your Gallery Artchill.
Sangeeta – Well, I started Artchill Gallery in 2008, it was also popularly known as the Art Corridors. In fact, I consider it to be my first milestone. When I created the vast corridors inside the Amber Fort, I
called the museum inside it “Eternity”. I can assure every art lover in the world that they’ll find something of their taste here.
JWB – Do you find it difficult juggling work and home?
Sangeeta – Honestly no, and only because my team is so amazing! They are a lovely bunch, and if I ever want to take a day off, I’m a hundred percent stress-free, ‘cuz these lovelies here handle everything remarkably!
JWB – That’s wonderful. And what are you like as a mother? A colorful mum or a strict one?
Sangeeta – My children treat me like their friend! My daughter is a smart girl, and my son is just lovely. I love that they are both social and are always there, whenever I need anything. We do chill together, but I am strict when I have to be!
JWB – How do we recognize what an artist is trying to say through the paintings?
Sangeeta – Every artist has angst or a moral concern. The viewer can open up the layers and get to the base of the concept. It’s not very difficult once we try to look through paintings, or understand what colors signify. For example, monsoon means dreams! For everyone who visits, even a layman feels it’s a visual treat. M.F. Hussain said that “Jab tak na pade aashiq ki nazar, shringaar adhura rehta hai”, so until the painting isn’t appreciated by its true fan, the painting’s existence does not make much sense. So layman or not, every artist needs its audience.
JWB – Tell us about your painting career.
Sangeeta – I began with portraits, and needless to say, the professionals made fun of me. So yes, I’m a self-taught painter, and it took me a while to get the hang of it. I remember it was in 1992 and 1996, I won the Academy of State Awards. That’s when my confidence started building, and I knew I could paint. I still paint whenever I get the time, but since I wanted to be a gallerist, I focused my attention there.
JWB – What suggestion would you like to give to the young budding artists?
Sangeeta – Take proper coaching, that way they can get the best guidance.
JWB – What colour will you paint your life with?
Sangeeta – Color? I’ll tell you what I’d paint. I would paint my two children, even if black and white, with them, in my life I don’t need colours.
We are inspired by Sangeeta, a self-made woman, who maintains perfect balance in her personal and professional lives! I think we could sit in her gallery and just stare at the paintings forever!
Her art shows are to begin soon. Once again, art fanatics, don’t miss out on this.
