Talk Journalism: Two Brilliant Ways Of Getting Followers For Your Instagram Business Page

Chances are, you are a happy user of Instagram. I run two accounts – one mine and the other, Poppy’s. So when Instagram India’s Tara Bedi visited Jaipur to conduct a workshop on Photography, I enrolled myself immediately.

Tara thinks that everyone can be a photographer. And, I second her as mobile phones and awesome filters today allow us to take brilliant pictures. She began the session by introducing us with the primary features of Instagram like pictures formats (square, portrait, landscape), video, captions and hashtags, photo filters, emojis, embedding, direct messages, hyper lapse, Boomerang, etc.

“Instagram’s mission is to build communities that share common interests. We have no boundaries, and you can virtually meet people with the similar mindset. We have about 500 million active users around the world. Amazingly, 85% people are located outside of the United States. 17 million photos are shared every day. The statistics give me goosebumps”, shared Tara.

Talking from a business perspective, she revealed, “It is the youth that uses Instagram the most. They explore, shop, share what they like. On an average, they spend about 21 minutes on Instagram every day. Think about the grand opportunity that you have to spread the word about your business and make it reach the potential audience.”

She added, “Make sure you use the right hashtags. To be honest, #LikeForLike is one of the lamest hashtag I have come across. Too many hashtags are unnecessary and make your post appear spam. Put only the necessary ones. Less is better.  Also, try to use the Location feature often.”

And what if you want more traffic on your page, asked someone from the audience. Tara replied, “Apart from posting regularly, interacting with other pages by liking and commenting, and making sure your pictures look presentable and not blurred out, there are few more ways to gain followers:

  1. Feed Takeovers: Let someone famous on Instagram join hands with you. For example, Photographer Ismail Ferdous was invited by Open Society Foundation for a photo project. That’s how Open Society Foundation attracted his fan following onto its page.
  2.  User Generated Content: Let your followers do the job for you. You can ask them to post pictures using a hashtag that you’ve created. Make it a sort of game that they will enjoy.”

Before leaving, she suggested us a few photographers on Instagram that we must follow. This includes Abhishek Chinnappa, Ravi Choudhary, Arati Kumar-Rao and Sumit Dayal. Did you just click on the ‘Search’ button?
