Think Women Can’t Wrestle? Geeta Phogat’s Video Will Prove You Wrong!

The odds were forever against her. She was ridiculed for having a penchant for wrestling and the elders from her village in Haryana were scandalized on seeing a woman trying to carve a niche for herself in a sport dominated by men.

But standing on the podium of the Commonwealth Games, clutching a gold medal in her hand, Geeta Phogat couldn’t care less about the opposition that she had to face for being a wrestler.

She knew that unlike her critics, her name would never fade away from the books of history. The journey of Commonwealth Gold medallist Geeta Phogat is nothing short of incredible. This video created to salute the courage and tenacity of Geeta perfectly depicts the challenges that she had to face in order to move closer to her feat.

Born in Haryana, a state notorious for draconian diktats against women and the domination of Khap panchayats, hostility from the people around her was a constant companion of Geeta right from the beginning.

People in her village could never quite digest the fact that instead of staying behind the purdah, a woman could wrestle in dangals, standing head to head with men. But Geeta didn’t give up. She didn’t let the criticisms affect her intensive training schedule in any way and went on to win the accolade for her spectacular performance in national tournaments until that fateful day at the Commonwealth Games when she made India proud of her.

The video is a tribute to the inimitable spirit of Geeta, who has inspired a generation of female athletes with her determination and hunger to win.
