Lady Be is a Rome-based artist and her project ‘Beaten Barbie – Stop Domestic Violence’ appeared at the Triennial for Contemporary Art in Verona, Italy, from June 9th to June 12th, and oh boy! It is brokenly beautiful!
And I mean that quite literally because the woman used fragments of beaten and bruised Barbie dolls to create a mosaic that draws urgent attention to gender-based abuse.
“Many people consider women to be dolls ― they think they can be treated as toys and thrown away or abused. To convey a universal message — that of [ending] violence — I have chosen a figure to symbolize all women and all ages. Something negative happens to women every day. With my ‘Beaten Barbie,’ I want to raise awareness and send a strong message that can reach everyone,” Lady Be said.
