The first book I reviewed under the Wattpad Review Series is ‘Year Of The Chick’ by Romi Moondi.

The book cover seems to reveal easily that the protagonist comes from an Indian family. The story is said to be inspired by true events that have occurred in Romi’s life.

The book follows the story of Romi Narindra, the middle child who has been deemed as the official ‘family fatty.’

Romi lives in Canada with her sister-slash-roommate. Her last boyfriend broke up with her via text, and she hasn’t been on a date since two years. Her sister, Neema is already thirty and is constantly nagged by her parents to get married soon, and they try to arrange a meeting with a suitable boy for her. Neema always comes up with a flaw every time she sees a boy. Knowing that her sister will soon find herself a suitable groom and that Romi would be the next in line, she decides to take the year to fall in love rather than marrying a stranger.

As a budding writer herself, Romi starts a blog called ‘Year of the Chick’ where she rants about being single and the custom of arranged marriages.

This leads her to find, James Caldwell who’s a hot British expat living in Spain and his picture immediately catches her eye.

Will she meet James or not?  Will they fall in love? Does, her sister, Neema, find her flawless mate?

The twists and turns in the story are extremely relatable and so is Romi’s no-bullshit attitude. Romi’s story is no less different from any girl with typical Indian parents. The book is not only a rom-com about a journey to find love but also a journey of introspection.

I rate this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars for its realism and relativity. You can read the book here.
