Following Gluten-free Diet? Here’s What You Should Know!

Every now and then a food theory is marketed so much that it becomes a trend or a fad. And, gluten-free products is one such trend.

Initially, the gluten-free diet was prescribed to the people suffering from the coeliac disease as it may cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight loss, tiredness and bloating.

But, slowly, the food industry marketers started selling gluten-free products alleging that it’s healthier.

According to a research study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, many people are eating gluten-free food even when they don’t require it medically.

The findings suggested that there was no increase in the number of people being diagnosed with the coeliac disease between 2009 and 2014.

However, the percentage of people following gluten-free diets more than tripled in that time.

The researchers explained that the number of individuals with “self-diagnosed gluten sensitivity” has risen and such people claimed that avoiding gluten “improved gastrointestinal health”, but don’t experience the symptoms specifically associated with coeliac disease.

This latest U.S. study came right after an incident where a café in Dublin, Ireland, put up a warning to show doctor’s note if they want to order gluten’s note.

Paulie, the café owner, posted on Facebook:

“This morning a girl asked us if we did gluten-free pancakes and when we asked her if she was a coeliac, she didn’t even know what the word meant and then proceeded to order regular, gluten-rich pancakes anyway. From now on, guests who demand gluten-free food are required to produce a doctor’s note which states that you suffer from coeliac disease. Guests following a gluten-free fad, who don’t even know what gluten is, can cop the f*ck on and eat regular food like everybody else.”

Well, it’s individual’s choice to eat something or not, but, one should not just blindly follow every trend.
