InHERited: What If These 5 Girls Had Inherited More Than Just Sarees & Jewelry!?

Happy International Women’s Day, lovely ladies! Welcome to our campaign ‘inHERited’ in association with Apeksha Atelier ready-to-move flats in Jaipur. Time immemorial, women have been inheriting their mothers’ clothes and expensive jewelry. Wonder, why not property or business?

Our joint campaign is all set to change the conventional rules and establish the new ones. But for this, we need your support. Apeksha’s Atelier tagline says “Dheere Dheere NOW!” Let’s stop using the phrase “धीरे धीरे होगा”, and let’s become go-getters. This International Women’s Day, five Jaipur girls tell us the stories of their inHERited valuables they (would) love flaunting, which they hold pride in.

Nothing feels more comfortable than mother’s style. While our shutterbug captured the emotions of these five girls donning belongings from their mothers’ trunks, we asked them what else they would love to inHERit! The results are going to take you by surprise.

Ayushi

The JWB girl who adores blacks and blues chose to wear a south silk saree in which pastel pink and purple were perfectly color-blocking one another. The saree is more than 50 years old and belongs to Ayushi’s great-grandmother.

Ayushi said, “I am all for maxis and summery clothes, but when this shoot was being planned, I was the first one to raise my hand in participation. I want to show-off this saree that I have inherited from my mother’s grandmother.”

JWB wonders what if Ayushi had said this instead“I am all for starting my own entrepreneurial journey, but when this shoot was being planned, I was the first one to raise my hand in participation. I want to show-off my business acumen that I have inherited from my mother’s grandmother.”

This girl who has cleverly incorporated her love for black by pairing an x-ray rose printed crop-top with the saree is sure to take over the world soon with her ‘quirky’ strength. What say?

Priya

If one thing that Priya loves more than pugs, is her collection of jhumkas. Before the shoot, she revealed how she’s going to pair her mommy’s orange cotton-silk saree with one such pair of the peacock jhumkas. And look, she is pulling it off quite gracefully.

She added, “Even the watch that I’m wearing belongs to my mother, which I’ve inHERited. Basically, if I could, I would steal her entire wardrobe. Do you know, this saree is older than I am? Mom bought it before I was born, and although it has got some marks on it, I love donning it.”

JWB wonders what if Priya had said this instead“Even the house where I’m posing belongs to my mother, which I’ve inHERited. Basically, if I could, I would steal her entire stunning property. Do you know, this plot is older than I am? Mom bought it before I was born, and although it has got some cracks in it, I love living in it.”

Anvita

Here, Anvita is wearing a block-print saree that is her mother’s. And there’s an interesting tale behind this six-feet long drape.

She revealed, “Mom bought this saree from her first salary and that’s how it holds a special place in her heart. When she gave it to me, I knew the kind of emotions and expectations she was handing me over. I love giving it my own version by pairing it with my crop-top.

JWB wonders what if Anvita had said this instead – “Mom bought this flat from her first salary and that’s how it holds a special place in her heart. When she gave it to me, I knew the kind of emotions and expectations she was handing me over. I love giving it my own version by replacing the old sofa covers with colorful printed ones.”

BTW, isn’t she effortlessly mixing grunge with ethnic? Hell yeah!

Ismeet

This girl in her early twenties is a proud owner of her mother’s gold necklace. But as she puts it, she’s yet to inherit it. For now, it’s more of borrowing like an acquisitive daughter.

She told us, “I love the intricate floral work done on this necklace. A couple of colorful gemstones are adding the needed bling, keeping it elegant enough for a girl my age. At that, I think I can wear it all my life. It’s never going to get old, never.”

Psst, can you see the glow-of-happiness on her face? No makeup, just pure happiness. And we know from where it is manifesting.

JWB wonders what if Ismeet had said this instead – “I love the business empire that my mother has established. A couple of new ones are adding the needed stars in her glory, keeping it profitable enough for a girl my age. At that, I think I can handle it all my life. It’s never going to get old, never.”

Bhavya

Before we could ask, she remarked, “If there is one thing that attracts me towards this saree is its color. The color red is every girl’s favorite, I guess! The chiffon saree belongs to my dearest mommy. The other day when I had nothing to wear, she offered me to try this saree. In a jiffy, I declared, “I am taking it forever.” She still giggles remembering the incident.”

JWB loves the minimalist look hidden in this saree. With that pearl necklace one, she joins the bandwagon of Maharani Gayatri Devi’s fans.

JWB wonders what if Bhavya had said this instead – “If there is one thing that attracts me towards this business venture is its unique idea. The CEO chair is every girl’s favorite, I guess! The company belongs to my dearest mommy. The other day when I was feeling low about my career, she offered me to try my hand at managing the Creative Department. In a jiffy, I declared, “I am taking it forever.” She still giggles remembering the incident.”

Don’t the second versions of their dialogues sound empowering? It’s because they make their mothers and grandmothers seem powerful and influential. Usually, we inherit sarees and jewelry from our fore-mothers, but how cool would it be if you were successful and empowered enough to provide entire business houses and mansions to your daughters?

It’s a heavy kick of encouragement in the gut, ladies!

Dear readers, if you want to share a valuable gift that you’ve inherited from your mothers or grandmothers, write to us at . We would love to feature you on our blog, ‘cz we believe that no woman needs a stylish when she’s wearing an inherited treasure.

Again, let’s take a cue from Apeksha’s Atelier tagline “Dheere Dheere NOW” and get going!

NOTE: JWB thanks these five bold girls for helping us show that the majority of Indian women have been facing bias of property/business inheritance. We have altered the second part of their dialogues to highlight this social inequality. The altered quotes do not represent their actual family situations.

Happy International Women’s Day.
