This Khap Panchayat’s Solution For Curbing Sexual Violence Is Cringeworthy

A Khap Panchayat in Uttar Pradesh has the best way to curb sexual exploitation in the society. Their solution? Ban mobile phones for all girls who are below 18 years!
You might be thinking that how this draconian solution came into their mind but as far as Khap Panchayats go, nothing is impossible.
Be it banning girls from wearing jeans to saying that eating Chinese food can promote sexual violence, the many abominable diktats pronounced by Khap Panchayats are well known for creating ripples in the media.
So this latest ‘gem of thought’ comes after a 15-year-old girl was forced to strip by her school director and the video was widely circulated on the internet. Instead of addressing the misogynistic attitude behind this and condemning the incident, the Panchayat has found a new enemy, the mobile phone.
At a mass gathering in Bhilaipur, the Panchayat issued its edict that girls below 18 years of age will not be allowed to use mobile phones. Boys, on the other hand, will be given a free hand as far as mobile phones go as apparently they are not in any danger of being ‘corrupted by mobile phones’.
Oh, and if you thought that just by issuing this order the Khap had done their bit, then you’re wrong. Apparently, they were not done with spewing venom and also went on to say that this measure will act as a precaution to protect girls from being exploited by people from a particular community.
Some country we are living in, eh? A school director tried to molest a girl and in the past had reportedly made advances to many other students as well, and all the Khap Panchayat could do was find fault with the mobile phones? *slow claps*
There’s an urgent need to get out from such regressive mindset because only then could call ourselves as the same group of people living in the 21st century.
