Sacrificing Maternity Leave Should Not Be A New Societal Norm

Managing maternity and work is a hard task, be it household work or a well-paying job. DSP of Raipur, Archana Jha has defied the societal expectations by taking only 4 and a half months of maternity leave from a total of two years that was available to her.

Her husband works in Bilaspur while she patrols the city two nights a week. When there’s no one to take care of her daughter, she takes her along to work.

This kinda reminds me of Yahoo’s CEO, Marissa Mayer’s maternity leave. She took only two weeks of her paid maternity leave and returned to work.

WHAT? Honestly, I find that too harsh for other women.

Archana’s case is a commendable example, but I don’t think that this should become a new societal norm. The kind of expectations that are being set here might make it harder for women to build their careers.

In my opinion, the corporate sectors should provide training to women returning to their jobs to catch up with what they’ve missed out on instead of reducing her maternity leave period. They should also ensure that the woman is getting paid for her maternity leave. Also, they shouldn’t shoo away pregnant women from their work and let them continue for as long as they’re capable.

Archana and Marissa are admirable women, but it should not be something we must all strive for.
