Worried About Your Child’s Low Scores? Anita Gautam Says That It Can Be Test Anxiety

Does your child score poorly in exams? Do his teachers keep complaining that he has a lot of potential but doesn’t work hard? Well, there might be a chance that your child has Test Anxiety.

I’ve had a first-hand experience with Test anxiety, and I haven’t been able to get rid of it till date. We consulted our favorite Psychiatrist Dr. Anita Gautam to get to know more about the issue.

How do we recognize a child who suffers from test anxiety?

“Usually, these kids are easy to recognize. They look very jittery when exam time is around the corner. Younger children show physical symptoms and make excuses from going to school. Older children, on the other hand, tend to lose concentration before exams. They get super nervous and fall sick because of diarrhea,” she said.

What do you think is the reason behind students having test anxiety?

“ A lot of it comes from high expectations of parents. Parents force their children to study harder and score higher than others rather than knowing their child’s capabilities. You will also notice this being very common among teenagers. Because of this, one of the reasons can also be hormonal changes and the mood swings that come along with it.”

How can parents deal with it?

“Parents must know how capable their children are and motivate them accordingly. They should not have a communication gap and be ready to provide help and support to their children when needed. Work with them and appreciate their scores. Parents must not order their kids around and provide them with enough breaks between study times. ”

And how can children reduce test anxiety?

“ Children can reduce anxiety by studying at least a month before exams. They should maintain a proper time table and abide by it. It is important to take a 5-minute break after every 45 minutes of studying. During those 5 minutes, the students can stretch, or rest, but social media and phones must be kept away while studying. Otherwise, it will interfere with their concentration. I would suggest indulging in group studies to improve learning. Also, if a student has friends who are anxious as well, he must stay away from them to prevent himself from becoming anxious.”

I have two more years of exams left, and I’m totes going to use these tips. Bye-bye anxiety.
