Emma Watson Launches HeForShe Arts Week On International Women’s Day

She won a million hearts for her role as Hermoine and staying true to her on-screen avatar Emma Watson is not a quitter. This is what Emma, the brand ambassador of HeForShe campaign of the UN had to say on International Women’s Day at the HeForShe Art Week about the need to make men understand the logic behind feminism.

“You not only need to understand feminism but also experience it.”

We agree with you Emma; it isn’t just talking about feminism but about applying its ideals in your everyday life, that actually matters!

“I learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Emma quoted these words of Maya Angelou and said that at this point of time what is important is to make people feel emotional about the problems that women trying to fight patriarchy are facing. It is only then that they will understand and become fellow crusaders in this battle for gender equality.

And here’s an anecdote from the life of Emma herself, that made her realise that how sexism is everywhere around us.

Emma recalled the day when she had turned 18, and the paparazzi took photographs up her skirt which were then published on the front page of a tabloid. But you know what, these photos were taken just a day earlier, it would have been illegal.

So do we see the difference here? The photographers dealt with the fact that the power actress had entered womanhood quite differently than her male colleagues in the film industry.

Emma felt that it is only when we start connecting with the gender inequality related problems on an emotional level, that we will understand its gravity and start taking them up in our daily life.

Now that’s why we adore Emma!
