This Indian Gymnast Is All Pumped Up To Cartwheel Her Way To Rio Olympics

When was the last time that India won a gymnastics medal in the Olympics? You don’t need to think a lot as such an instance never came in the way of our country. But now, at Rio 2016 we might manage to finally script history and the flag bearer of our hope is none other than the ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar.

This is the first time that India will go to the Olympics, with one of the sportspersons declared as a World Class Gymnast. Yup, this was the honour that was bestowed upon Dipa by the Federation de Internationale de Gymnastique. Considered one of the highest honours for a gymnast, this award is given to the top 30 qualifiers in multiple apparatus events or the event finalists.

Dipa got this award for her stellar performance at the World Championships, where she came 5th and managed to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

Her coach, BS Nandy has said that while it is quite common for gymnasts from Russia, U.S., Japan and China to bag this award, it is a tremendous achievement for any Indian to have her name on the list.

Oh!  Also, Dipa was so pleased by this achievement that she wanted to throw a party for her fellow gymnasts. But hey, Mr. Nandy is a taskmaster.

“I told her, chup raho, pehle Olympics ho jaane do! Bahot kaam pada hai.”

Yup, this is what her coach had to say to her. Well, we second Mr. Nandy. I guess the party will be even more worthwhile if Dipa manages to clinch a medal at Rio.

For the first time in many years, India has a realistic chance of getting a medal in gymnastics, a feat that has always eluded us.

Get a medal for us, Dipa, and the whole of India will throw you a party!
